Opportunities for Groups

We provide opportunities for volunteer groups to invest in local neighborhoods and create healthy communities that we all want to share. Assemble a team from your organization, school, or youth group to help our low-income neighbors and community centers!  Please note that the nature of our work is most appropriate for volunteers in high school or older.  Volunteer groups have a variety of opportunities to get involved with RTP including:

Our volunteer needs are vast and varied so whether you're group is eager to paint a house or curious about how to channel your shared passion for photography into serving your community, there's a project at RTP that could use your help!

Get your team involved!

National Rebuilding Day Prep/Wrap-Up Opportunities

National Rebuilding Day (NRD), held every year on the last Saturday of April, offers a variety of opportunities for volunteer groups to get involved with us. Volunteer groups can sign-up to be an NRD prep or wrap-up team which entails volunteering for a four-hour shift on a weekday or weekend.  Work on these days can include, prepping a home for painting (scraping the exterior, helping the homeowner pack up pictures and move furniture), clearing out the yard for landscaping work, setting posts for fence work, some carpentry work, interior clean-up and prepping supply kits at our Redwood City warehouse.

If there is space, volunteer groups are also invited to partake in the repair projects that happen on National Rebuilding Day. Priority for volunteering on National Rebuilding Day is given to volunteer groups who are interested in financially sponsoring a repair project and completing the repairs. If there is a need for additional volunteers at any project site, then groups who would like to volunteer but not financially sponsor a project will be invited to participate in a repair project on National Rebuilding Day. An NRD repair team will spend a 6-8 hour shift at a Peninsula home or community center and may be asked to help with an assortment of different housing repairs including, but not limited to: painting, debris removal, installing fire safety equipment, demoing old structures like ramps, sheds, and fences and assisting in the construction of new ones, landscaping, carpet removal, flooring installation, and window repairs.

Who: Great for any size group! Please note that if invited to volunteer on National Rebuilding Day, your group may be divided into smaller groups depending on the need at each individual project site.

What: Painting, landscaping, fence repairs, ramp/handrail repairs, installing fire safety equipment, grab bars, and address numbers, debris removal, carpet removal, caulking, demolition, landscaping, etc.

When: April - May

Where: Volunteer groups may be placed at our Redwood City office or at any home or community center in our service area which covers San Mateo County and Northern Santa Clara County (Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Altos, and Palo Alto).

National Rebuilding Day Opportunities

National Rebuilding Day is the perfect opportunity for your volunteer group to lend a hand to a Peninsula neighbor in need. National Rebuilding Day repair teams come together on the last Saturday of April for an epic eight hour day of transformative renovations for the homes and community facilities of our low-income neighbors. The majority of our volunteers on this day come from sponsoring organizations. A company or community organization financially adopts a home or community center, rallies a core group of volunteers to work on a project site and nominates a volunteer captain from among their ranks to help liaison between their volunteer group, the RTP office, and their homeowner or community facility. NRD repair teams can expect to partake in a variety of home repair projects including: painting, debris removal, installing fire safety equipment, demoing old structures like ramps, sheds, and fences and assisting in the construction of new ones, landscaping, carpet removal, flooring installation, and window repairs.

Volunteers who are not connected to a sponsoring organization will be waitlisted and assigned to projects depending upon availability.  On National Rebuilding Day, we also have volunteer needs in the following areas: photographers, videographers, runners, picnic celebration, office crew, and energy team.

Who:  Please note, priority for site placement is given to groups who can also financially sponsor a repair project. If there is a need for additional volunteers at any project site, then groups who would like to volunteer but not financially sponsor a project will be invited to participate in a repair project on National Rebuilding Day. Depending on the need at each individual project site, these groups may be asked to divide themselves into smaller groups and assist at different project sites.

What: Painting, landscaping, fence repairs, ramp/handrail repairs, installing fire safety equipment, grab bars, and address numbers, debris removal, carpet removal, caulking, demolition, landscaping, etc.

When: April 25, 2020 (the last Saturday in April), 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Where: Volunteer groups may be placed at our Redwood City office or at any home or community center in our service area which covers San Mateo County and Northern Santa Clara County (Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Altos, and Palo Alto).

Team Build Opportunities

Team Builds provide foundations, service organizations, congregations, and community-minded companies and their employees with an opportunity to serve the community and strengthen the relationships within their team all while building a positive association with a nonprofit that holds a long, successful history in Peninsula neighborhoods. Team Build projects happen every year from June through October and may be organized at a Peninsula home or community center. Check our sponsorship details, complete our sponsorship form, or connect with our Development & Communications Manager, Alie Berka, at (650) 366-6597 x230 or at Alie@RTPeninsula.org to organize a team build for your group!

Who: Perfect for organizations who would like to financially sponsor a repair project and coordinate a group of volunteers for a day of fulfilling community service. Team Builds are ideal for groups of 15-30 people to repair one home. If you have a group larger than 30 people, we'd love to discuss coordinating repairs for a community facility or a block build that might include 2-3 homes near one another for volunteers to repair.

What: Painting, landscaping, fence repairs, ramp/handrail repairs, installing fire safety equipment, grab bars, and address numbers, debris removal, carpet removal, caulking, demolition, landscaping, etc.

When: June - October, typically a 6-hour shift on a weekday (9am-3pm) or the weekend

Where: Volunteer groups can be placed at any home or community center in our service area which covers San Mateo County and Northern Santa Clara County (Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Altos, and Palo Alto).

Warehouse Volunteer Opportunities

While it may look like all of our RTP magic happens on project sites, a great deal of preparation and clean-up drives the success of each individual project our team takes on. For example, each year, we reuse paint sundries and cleaning supplies from the previous year’s National Rebuilding Day. We depend on volunteer groups to help us clean and reorganize these supplies as they return and to assist our staff in consolidating, inventorying, and maintaining donated, new, and reused materials and supplies. Volunteer teams also help prepare materials and supplies for delivery to all National Rebuilding Day and Safe at Home project sites. Warehouse volunteer teams also play a critical role in supporting our office with mailings and data-entry throughout the year.

Who: Great for smaller groups of 5-20 people, particularly those looking for opportunities lasting approximately 2-3 hours or that are less physically strenuous.

What: Cleaning supplies, organizing materials in warehouse, consolidating and inventorying supplies, preparing paint kits and supply kits for repair projects, etc.

When: We have the highest need for warehouse volunteers from March - May, the months leading up to and immediately following National Rebuilding Day. Volunteer teams typically contribute their time in four-hour shifts on weekdays or weekends. However, we welcome warehouse volunteer groups year-round!

Where: Warehouse volunteer groups will be working at the warehouse attached to our Redwood City Office.
